I will be moving in a few weeks to my boyfriends family’s house while I apartment hunt in NOVA before I start my new job.  This is a little stressful because most of my things will be in boxes for at least two months which means I will completely forget what each box contains by the time I need to unpack.  I’ve been pretty good at labeling my boxes so far with post-its (taped down of course) which is good, and I’ve started organizing my things into teaching stuff and living stuff.  I have accumulated a lot of school supplies in my days as a student and I have also received some “new teacher” care packages with scissors and dry erase markers and the like.  I made a box labelled “my first classroom” with a crap ton of extra paper, folders, staples, staple removers, post-its, pens, pencils, erasers, and more.  I’m really happy I did so when I move in I can keep this box aside and not try to store it out of the way.

I’ve also decided I need a box of things I need for my first few days at a new place.  The worst thing to do after a long day of packing is try to find the box you put your plates and dishes in, and try to unpack them to eat.  Not only is this frustrating, but since I will most likely be STARVING and angry, I do not want to risk my breakable dish-ware to the wrath of tired, sweaty, and irritated future me.

Here is what I think I will put in my “move-in box” (or boxes if the list gets too long)

  • Paper plates, plastic cups, and plastic forks/knives/spoons
  • Paper towels
  • One bath towel
  • One hand towel
  • Hand soap
  • One extra toothbrush and a small travel toothpaste
  • One new clean shower curtain liner
  • Shower curtain holders

I also think it would be wise to label a “daily needs” box for things like shampoo, body wash, makeup, contact solution, etc. so that those things don’t end up all over the place when I’m trying to get ready for bed on my first night.  In my experience in moving, a lot of times any member of the male species who is helping you move just takes whatever box he can find and stacks it on some other box he finds.  I do NOT want my makeup remover and contact solution on the bottom of some large pile at 1am when I am trying to get some sleep after a day of unpacking (although hopefully by that point future me will have been fed because boy would that be a terrifying sight).

I think I have decided that I am going to label my boxes with the stuff and try to put the area it belongs in (kitchen, bedroom, etc.) even though it probably won’t matter the day of.  Last time I moved I had so much help I stayed inside while my friends brought things in so I could arrange them how I needed them and things still made their way inside.  It was awesome because I knew where things were and I didn’t have to realize the next day that the heavy box I can’t lift is upstairs and I need it downstairs.  I know a lot of moving boxes have those labels already on them, unfortunately I did not buy any of my own boxes so all of those things are already filled in or it is a box from another kind of company.  I have about 500 post-its with a bunch of different colors so I think as I label I’ll use one color to describe what is in the box and another to signify which area it belongs in.  At least when I pile everything in to my new place I won’t accidentally unpack a kitchen box in the bathroom.

Phew. Enough planning and more DOING.  Gotta get back to work!
